Prof. Dr. Georg Leowald, a professor at the Ulm University of Design (HfG), joined Wilkhahn at the end of the 1950s. He went on to create numerous successful designs. These designs were marked by clear lines and refined details in both traditional wood craftsmanship and innovative plastic technology, embodying the characteristic "architect chairs" of Wilkhahn. He presented a plastic structure as the "chair of the future," and he was proven right. His fiberglass seat shells, such as the 2002, 227, 240, or 241 models, outshone the "Plastic Chairs" by Charles Eames and Herman Miller due to the improved elasticity of the fiberglass.
The 353A frame was made of domestic beech wood. This simple, plain chair was exceptionally comfortable and was used in social institutions, offices, and private homes. The model featured a padded seat and backrest, with chair legs made of solid round wood and stretchers made of square timber.
