On the chair with armrests, model 704, Selders combined wood with high flexibility for the seat platform, similar to the patented “Flexer” principle that Leowald had developed with steel. By separating the seat and backrest, the seat platform could adapt to individual posture.

Mathias Selders has unfortunately become rare in our archives. We know that he joined Wilkhahn in the early 1960s, possibly coming from the field of architecture and from the circle of Prof. Dr. Georg Leowald. His designs consistently reflect his architectural background, with clear forms and a deep appreciation for the material wood. With the 704, Selders combined wood with the precursor of Leowald’s patented Flexer technology. By splitting the backrest and seat, the seat could be moved individually, marking the first technical step toward "active, healthy sitting."
