The Italian design collective Memphis was founded in December 1980, when a group of young designers and architects gathered in Ettore Sottsass' living room and wanted to break away from the dogmas of industrial design. The record Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again by Bob Dylan played over and over again; thus Memphis was born. The first Memphis collection of 55 products was presented in Milan in September 1981 under the direction of Ettore Sottsass. More than 2,000 people crowded outside the gallery and blocked the city's traffic, as the objects mixed elegance and kitsch with absurd and irrational shapes, garish colors and patterns - they almost looked like something out of a comic book and quickly captured the public's attention.

The iconic Teodora Side Chair was created for Vitra in the mid-1980s by Ettore Sottsass, a pioneer of the Memphis movement. The clear, rectangular lines of the frame form a successful contrast to the curved backrest made of transparent Plexiglas. The vintage chair is in good to very good condition apart from a small veneer damage on the left leg.
